An individual was arrested in Colombo 07 by the Tourist Police Division, for allegedly selling fake gems to a foreigner.

The suspect was arrested based on a complaint filed with the Police by said foreigner.

The arrestee is said to be a resident of Beruwela.

The suspect had reportedly sold two fake gem stones to a New Zealand national last December, by claiming that they were blue sapphires.

The sale was made for a price of USD 2400, Police stated.

Police also stated that the foreigner had travelled to Hong Kong, where he discovered that the gem was a fake upon further inspection.

Accordingly, the New Zealand national had arrived back in Sri Lanka and filed a complaint about the incident with the Tourist Police Division on May 18.

The arrestee was remanded after being produced before the Fort Magistrate Court, Police Spokesperson’s Office stated.
