There is a move to get the Cabinet nod to privatize the Mattala International Airport by granting 60 per cent of its authority to India, the Joint Opposition alleged Tuesday.

MP Bandula Gunawardena while speaking to reporters at a press conference held in Colombo also accused the government of attempting to take advantage of the natural disaster situation in a bid to sell country’s resources.

“The government attempts to fish in troubled waters,” he added.

“The transfer of key institution’s authority like this is a national crime,” Gunawardena said.

While speaking on the relief efforts, he added, “It is disappointing to see that the government has failed to establish a proper mechanism to manage a crisis situation.”

He further state that a proper assessment report should be compiled by the Department of Census and Statistics regarding the value of the lost property. Hence, the lost value can be claimed via the respective insurance plans.
