Gevindu Kumaratunga urged the government be honest and reveal the truth regarding the new constitution to the country, the Maha Sangha and the masses.

He stated that the President and the Prime Minister are making various statements that no harm will be done to the existing constitution’s contents regarding Buddhism and a united country following the questions raised by the Maha Nayaka Theros of the three Nikayas.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday (14), he also said that the Prime Minister, Justice Minister and others are making various statements regarding the constitution and that this has given rise to various problematic situations.

Kumaratunga also charged that the Lal Wijenayake committee (Public Representations Committee on Constitutional Reform) was not appointed within the framework of the Parliament’s constitution-making process.

He also stated that not even a Maha Nayaka Thero was included to serve as a specialist for any of the reports compiled on formulating a new constitution.
