Several members of the Joint Opposition arrived at the Welikada prison earlier today (8), to call upon Lalith Weeratunga and Anusha Palpita who were admitted to the Prison hospital today.

The contingent included MP Bandula Gunawardene, MP Dullas Alahapperuma and MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage.

Speaking to the media following their visit, Bandula Gunawardene stated that this incident should be recorded as the first time the government has taken ‘political prisoners’.

He also stated that he is disappointed with the verdict given by the Colombo High court. He further stated that in his view neither of the perpetrators committed any wrongs.

MP Gunawardene further stated that Lalith Weeratunga had not stolen even a cent from the people of Sri Lanka and that he was an honest public servant.
