Retired Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan’s father, Sinnasamy Muttiah stated that the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium was named after his son, but that it was now no longer named after him.

He accordingly requested Mahanayake Thero of the Malwathu Chapter, Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thero meet with the Sports Minister and intervene to solve the issue.

Addressing the media, he explained that although the Stadium had been named after Muralitharan during the former President’s regime, it was no longer named after him.

He further explained that the former President, Mahinda Rajapaksa had even aired a radio announcement that he would be naming the stadium after his son on the occasion that Muralitharan scored 800 wickets.

He accordingly requested that the Stadium be named after his son once again, and also said that Mahanayake Thero had promised to intervene and solve the issue.
