President halts issuing of licenses for cattle transport

President Maithripala Sirisena has given instructions to temporarily suspend the issuing of licenses to transport cattle, the President’s Media Division said.

“Incidents of illegal transporting of cattle are rapidly increasing and through these activities have a huge impact upon the dairy industry as well as agricultural needs.”

Accordingly, until an appropriate process is implemented issuing of licenses to transport cattle will be temporarily suspended, the PMD statement said.

At present the issuing of licenses to transport cattle done by the District Secretary.

Various serious accidents and incidents resulting in fatality were reported from different parts of the country when illegally transporting cattle and yesterday (26) also a tragic incident reported from Bulankulama, Anuradhapura where two young women died in an accident.
