The Department of Railways has decided to impose a ban on trade inside trains.

Railways General Manager S.M.Abeywickrama said that the decision was taken by transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva after taking into consideration the complaints received from commuters about the inconvenience faced due to hawkers.

However, considering the loss of daily income of these traders the ban exempts trade in railway stations other than the main railway stations.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Self Employees handed over a letter to UN Office,Colombo, alleging that the new decision violates their human rights.

“There are about 3200 self employees who are engage in trade inside trains. This decision violates our fundamental Human rights”the Federation alleged.
