The Secretary to the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Wildlife, R.M.D.B. Meegasmulla, has been transferred to the Ministry of Special Assignments, with immediate effect.

Accordingly a decision is to be taken to appoint the current Secretary to the Ministry of Special Assignments, Mr. D. Nanayakkara, as the new Secretary of the Sustainable Development and Wildlife Ministry, government sources told Ada Derana.

When contacted by Ada Derana, the Minister of Sustainable Development and Wildlife Gamini Jayawickrama Perera also confirmed the transfer order.

He stated that the transfer of the ministerial secretary is a normal transfer which takes place in the public sector and that it is not a punishment or due to any such decision.

However, the Ministry of Wildlife has come under heavy criticism recently over the murder of the notorious tusker ‘Dala Puttuwa.’

The ministry had also been accused over the release of several species of exotic birds, illegal imported into the country,  by Sri Lanka Customs and handing over to the national zoological gardens.
