SLPP supporters assault 4 doctors in Mahiyanganaya

December 20, 2017   05:58 pm

Four doctors attached to the Mahiyanganaya Base Hospital have allegedly been assaulted by a group of supporters of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).

The doctors in question had visited an eatery located at Mahiyanganaya Bridge Junction after work last night when they were involved in an argument with a group of supporters of the political party, who were pasting posters for the upcoming election.

The SLPP supporters had then proceeded to assault the four doctors resulting in one of them being admitted to Mahiyanganaya Base Hospital with critical injuries. He has been transferred to the Badulla General Hospital for further treatment.

Doctors of the Mahiyanganaya Base Hospital engaged in a token strike this morning in protest over the incident leading to the disruption of services at the hospital’s Out Patient Department (OPD).

Three suspects, supporters of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, have been arrested today in connection with the incident while Mahiyanganaya Police is conducting further investigations.
