December 21, 2017   08:04 am

Due to an active cloudiness in the sea areas to the south-east of Sri Lanka, the possibility for heavy showers/thundershowers and sudden roughness, associated with sudden increase of wind speed (up to 70-80kmph) in the deep sea areas to the south and south-east of Sri Lanka is high.

The Department of Meteorology requests naval and fishing communities to be vigilant in this regards.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanturai to Galle via Trincomalee, Pottuvil and Hambantota. Showers or thunder showers will occur at several palaces in other sea areas in the evening or night.

Winds will be north-easterly in direction and wind speed will be 30-40kmph in the sea areas around the island, the department said.

Winds will be increase up to 50-55kmph and seas will fairly rough in the deep and shallow sea area off the coast extending from Kankasanturai to Colombo via Puttalam and also in Galle to Hambanthota via Matara.

The Met Department says that due to a wavy type atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, cloudy skies and showery conditions are expected further.

Showers will occur at times in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, Southern and Uva provinces and Matale district. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere particularly after 2.00pm.

Fairly heavy falls (above 75mm) can be expected at some places in Eastern, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Uva provinces and in the Kalutara district.

Fairly strong gusty wind (50 kmph) can be expected in North-central and Central province and Hambanthota, Monaragala and Matara districts, it said.
