The petition filed against holding of the Cremation Ceremony of Venerable Meegahadure Gnanarathana Thero at the public ground-Jaffna Fort, was rejected by Jaffna Magistrate today (22).

The Chief Sangha Nayaka of the Northern Province and Chief Incumbent of the Jaffna Sri Naga Vihara Venerable Meegahadure Gnanarathana Thera passed away on Tuesday (19).

A number of civil organizations placed their opposition against the holding of the cremation ceremony telling that a memorial and a kovil were built in the ground in the memory of assassinated members at the Tamil Analysis Conference.

The civil organizations have also sent letters to Jaffna Municipal Council and Jaffna Chief Minister C. V. Vigneswaran while staging their opposition.

However, Jaffna Magistrate Court judge S. Sadeeshkan rejected the petition and ordered to hold the Cremation Ceremony in the ground as previously planned, when the petition was taken up for hearing today (22).
