Cigarettes prices go up with excise duty hike

The excise duty on cigarettes has been increased by Rs 3.80 per stick with effect from midnight yesterday (July 31), the Ministry of Finance said.

The relevant government notification said that the excise duty on cigarettes, each exceeding 72mm but not exceeding 84mm in length, has been increased to Rs 33,550 per 1000 cigarettes.

Meanwhile the excise duty on cigarettes exceeding 84mm in length has been increased to Rs 37,675 per 1000 cigarettes.

Accordingly the prices of cigarettes has also increased as a result of the duty hike. The price per cigarette has reportedly been increased by Rs 5.
