Govt. fears Nalaka de Silva while JVP fears a referendum – Gammanpila

September 18, 2018   05:03 pm

Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) Leader MP Udaya Gammanpila says that the government is afraid to arrest DIG Nalaka de Silva.

Plotting to assassinate the head of the government is not a mere murder but is an anti-government conspiracy, stated the MP.

However, Nalaka de Silva hasn’t been arrested and ideally he should be remanded by now, says Gammanpila.

He points out that DIG de Silva is able to influence the officials conducting the investigation as he holds a high ranking post.

He further says that, DIG de Silva hasn’t even received a suspension of work on this, let alone be remanded.

MP Udaya Gammanpila commenting on the 20th Amendment to the constitution said that although the JVP had previously said that they were ready to face people at a referendum, the JVP’s lawyer, President’s Counsel Jeff Alagaratnam has argued before the Supreme Court that the bill should not be referred to people at a referendum.

The Supreme Court yesterday concluded hearing petitions against the 20th Amendment presented by the JVP to abolish the executive presidency.

Speaking further, Gammanpila questions why JVP should be reluctant to go before the people if they do the correct thing.
