Downpours exceeding 100 mm in several areas belonging to Haldummulla Divisional Secretariat in Badulla District have heightened the risk of rockslides, says the Badulla District Additional Director of Disaster Management Center E.L.M Udayakumara.
Accordingly, 150 people of 43 families in the Bathgoda area of Beragala Grama Niladhari Division were evacuated to Chulananda Tamil Vidyalaya at around 8.00 p.m. last night (04).
The National Building Research Organization had previously named this area as a high-risk zone and the risk of rockslides has increased as people constantly set fire to forests, according to Mr. Udayakumara.
He added that further actions will be taken regarding the situation after sending over a group of officers from the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) to study the area.
