A fire has broken out at around 10.00 a.m. this morning (27) at a coir factory in Karagahagedara area in Kuliyapitiya, said Ada Derana reporter.
A part of the factory, in which a substantial stock of coir fibre was stored, had been gutted in the fire.
All the workers of the factory had been away for the tea break while the fire erupted. Upon hearing the security alarm they had arrived at the scene, however, they had failed to douse the rapidly escalating fire.
Several workers were admitted to Kuliyapitiya Hospital over minor injuries and allergic reaction caused by the heat, according to hospital sources.
It was reported that the joint effort of the residents of the area, officers of Kuliyapitiya Police and several civil organizations had curbed the fire from spreading.
A senior officer of the factory stated that the damage caused by the fire is yet to be estimated.
