Universities open only for non-academic staff on May 11

Universities will only be for the non-academic staff on the 11th of May 2020, said Minister of Information and Communication Technology, and Higher Education Bandula Gunawardena.

Despite the universities are to be reopened on May 11, no academic activity or opening of hostels will take place he said.

Some members of the non-academic staff have been requested to report for duty over the sterilization process carried out in the university premises on the aforementioned date, the Minister pointed out.

There is no intention of opening universities under the traditional method, as social distancing may not be maintained, he added.

Academic activities of universities are currently carried out through the internet; Vice-Chancellors and the University Grants Commission is to report on this tomorrow (10), said Gunawardena.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Dullas Alahapperuma says that a decision on the reopening of schools under several phases will be taken next week.

Once schools are subjected to a sterilization process, they will be closed for 4 days, he said.

As the second phase, the schools will be open students facing the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination, said the Minister.
