Sri Lanka Police says that 52,126 individuals have been arrested so far for violating the curfew imposed to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Speaking at a press conference today (12), Police Spokesman SP Jaliya Senaratne stated that the Police has submitted information to courts regarding 9,783 of them.

He also said that cases have been filed against 5,212 curfew violators so far.

Meanwhile a total of 13,594 vehicles were taken into police custody over curfew violations, the Police Spokesman said.

He said 10,366 of those vehicles have been handed over back to the owners of vehicles pending legal action.

The Police Spokesman said that the curfew enforced by the police had been argued at two courts and that yesterday a magistrate’s court had given a clear decision that the measures taken by the police to impose a curfew was completely legal and the arrests made under the curfew were also legal.
