Water levels of Kalu, Ging & Nilwala rivers reach minor flood situation

The Department of Irrigation has warned that the water levels of three rivers – Kalu, Ging and Nilwala – have reached minor flood levels, due to the heavy rainfall during the past 24 hours.

Accordingly, communities in floodplains of Ratnapura, Elapatha, Kuruwita, Kiriella, Ayagama Divisional Secretariat divisions in Ratnapura District have been advised to stay vigilant and to evacuate to safe places due to the rising water level of Kalu River.

If the rainfall continues, the water level of Kalu River can reach major flood situation, the Irrigation Department has said further.

The water level of Ging River has reached minor flood level at Thawalama and Baddegama areas today (19) owing to the prevailing dire weather condition.

People living in floodplains of Neluwa, Kotapola and Thawalama Divisional Secretariat divisions are urged to evacuate to sale locations.

In the meantime, Nilwala River reached minor flood level at Panadugama and Pitabeddara areas.

Communities in floodplains of Pitabeddara, Akuressa and Athuraliya Divisional Secretariat divisions have been advised to evacuate to due to the prevailing situation.

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) says that the general public can contact the hotline 117 for further information on the matter.
