Retired cop arrested over shooting pet dog to death remanded

The retired Superintendent of Police, who was arrested for shooting a pet dog to death, has been remanded until May 29.

The case was taken up before Negombo Chief Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya today (26).


A pet dog named ‘Max’ was shot dead in Dalupotha area in Negombo, on the Vesak Full Moon Poya Day (May 07).

Negombo Police had launched an investigation, following the report of the incident. A retired police officer was later placed under arrest upon inspection of footage obtained from a CCTV camera in the neighbourhood.

When the case was taken up last Tuesday (22), President’s Counsel Ashan Fernando had made submissions to the court pertaining to the death of the dog.

The Negombo Chief Magistrate had ordered that all reports regarding the incident be submitted to the court on May 22 and the case was subsequently postponed until today (26).
