A 53-year-old man has been assaulted to death in the area of Mirihana last night (10), the Police said.

The victim was identified as the Chairman of Self-Employed Professionals’ Three-Wheeler Association, Sunil Jayawardena, a resident of Kesbewa area.

According to a piece of information received by Mirihana Police at around 6.20 pm last evening (10) via the 119 Hotline, an argument had broken out between two men including Jayawardena and several employees of a finance company at the firm’s premises.

Jayawardena had turned up at the said finance company to discuss some matter concerning a leased three-wheeler which belonged to one of his associates.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the heated argument between the two parties had escalated to a brawl, resulting in an assault on Jayawardena.

He had succumbed to the injuries upon admission to the Colombo South Teaching Hospital in Kalubowila.

Eight employees of the finance company in question have been arrested on suspicion over the killing of three-wheeler union chairman. They have been charged with unlawful assembly and murder.

Mirihana Police is probing the incident further.
