Karuna Amman questioned for over 7 hours at CID

Tamil United Freedom Front (TUFF) Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias ‘Karuna Amman’ left the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), a short while ago, after giving a 07-hour long statement, Ada Derana reporter said.

The former deputy minister had arrived at the CID at around 10.30 a.m. this morning to record a statement with regard to recent controversial comments he had made on the killing of Sri Lankan soldiers while he was a member of the now-defunct terrorist organization.

Speaking to reporters while leaving the CID premises, Karuna said that had no intention of insulting the Sri Lankan Army or the government through his comments which were made during election campaigning and that he did not intend it in that way.

The Police on Monday (22) launched an investigation into the statement made by the one time LTTE commander turned politician at a meeting in Navadinveli on June 19, glorifying the killing of Sri Lankan soldiers during his time as an LTTE militant.

He had reportedly said: “When I was a member of the LTTE, I killed some 2000 to 3000 Sri Lankan army personnel in one night at Elephant Pass. I have killed more in Killinochchi. That is certainly higher than the number of lives the coronavirus has claimed in Sri Lanka.”

He was summoned to the CID to provide a statement on Tuesday (23), however Karuna Amman had informed the CID through a lawyer that he was not in a position to provide a statement due to ill health.

He had requested for another date to provide a statement and accordingly arrived at the CID today (25).
