A female student of the Sri Jayewardenepura University has tested positive for Covid-19.

The Vice Chancellor of the University Senior Prof. Sudantha Liyanage said students of the Management Faculty, who were staying at hostels, have been self-isolated following the detection of a novel coronavirus case.

According to reports, the undergrad in question is a third-year student of the Management Faculty and a resident of Hirana area in Panadura.

She is currently under medical care at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH), Senior Prof. Liyanage added.

The undergrad had been staying at a boarding place in Gangodawila, along with two other female students.

Speaking to Ada Derana, her sister revealed that the aunt of one of the two roommates is an employee of the Brandix apparel factory in Minuwangoda, who recently tested positive for the virus.

Senior Prof. Liyanage said these two close associates of the virus-infected student were directed to PCR tests.

The mother of the virus-infected student is reportedly a nurse attached to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Panadura Base Hospital.

The authorities of the hospital stated that the members of the ICU team including the student’s mother and patients were placed under isolation at the hospital and were referred to PCR tests.

Following the new development, the hospital’s ICU had to be closed off for several hours this morning.

In the meantime, PCR tests were carried out on the family members of the student today. They have since been placed under self-isolation.
