Bogambara Prison inmates protest on roof over COVID-19 fears

November 12, 2020   11:48 am

A group of inmates at the old Bogambara prison have launched a protest on the roof over the prevailing COVID-19 situation within the premises.

Authorities have been deployed to the prison for the quarantine processes and nearly 800 detainees have been placed under quarantine so far.

Reportedly, 30 inmates and two officers have been identified to have contracted COVID-19.

The protesting inmates are requesting that they be subjected to PCR testing as soon as possible or be transferred to another prison, as they are also more likely to be infected with COVID-19 considering the prevailing situation.

Speaking to Ada Derana, the Kandy Police stated that arrangements have already been made to conduct PCR investigations on the detainees.
