The protest staged by a group of inmates at the Kalutara Prison on a rooftop yesterday has been called off.
Commissioner General of Prisons, Thushara Upuldeniya said the protest was ended following discussions with prison officials.
Nearly 15 inmates had launched a protest on the rooftop of a prison building last evening claiming that their court proceedings had been delayed due to delays in receiving the Government Analyst’s reports.
The protesting inmates demanded that the relevant reports be released immediately and to expedite the process of granting them bail.
The inmates reportedly further stressed that they want to go back to their homes as soon as possible due to the current coronavirus situation.
The protesting inmates were said to be suspects arrested and remanded on drug-related charges.
Several inmates at the old Bogambara Prison had also launched a protest on Thursday (12) over the prevailing COVID-19 situation within the prison premises.
A total of 176 inmates and 04 officials at several prisons across the island have tested positive for the virus so far, Prisons Commissioner General said further.
