Fmr DIG Vaas Gunawardena contracts Covid-19

Former Police DIG Vaas Gunawardena who was incarcerated at the Welikada Prison has tested positive for Covid-19.

The Department of Prisons said he was transferred to the prison hospital for medical care.

Gunawardena was arrested in connection with the alleged abduction and murder of a businessman named Mohamed Siyam in 2013.

Colombo High Court subsequently convicted and sentenced him to death over the murder.

Gunawardena was later found guilty of threatening Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers who interrogated him regarding the Mohamed Siyam murder and was sentenced to five-year rigorous imprisonment in 2018.
