Mahinda Samarasinghe to resign from parliament to take up new post

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP from Kalutara District, Mahinda Samarasinghe is set to resign from parliament, Ada Derana learns.

According to reports, MP Samarasinghe is expected to take up a new post as the ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United States and Mexico.

He will tender his resignation upon President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s return to the island following the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, reports further revealed.

The parliamentarian’s appointment comes after retirement of Ravinatha P. Aryasinha from public service, who served as the former Sri Lankan ambassador to the two Northern American nations.

Upon joining the Sri Lanka Foreign Service, MP Samarasinghe served as the First Secretary to the Sri Lanka High Commission in Australia and as Counselor for the Sri Lankan Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva in the 1980s.

In addition, he has represented the island nation at the International Labour Organization, World Health Organization, International Telecommunication Union and the World Meteorological Organisation.
