One dead, 8 injured as safari jeep topples at wildlife sanctuary

One person has reportedly died while another 08 persons have been injured after a Safari Jeep carrying a group of local tourists toppled at a wildlife sanctuary in Habarana.

The incident had occurred at the Hurulu Eco Park in Habarana between 2.00-3.00 p.m. today (07), Ada Derana reporter said. 

According to reports, the driver of the safari jeep had lost control of the vehicle as he attempted to speed away from a charging wild elephant.

This had caused the safari jeep to topple, killing one passenger and injuring 08 others. 

The deceased is a 46-year-old father of three from Kottawa, who had succumbed to injuries while being rushed to the Habarana Hospital.

The wounded persons include the driver of the vehicle, two children and several women. 

Habarana Police said that preliminary inquiries had revealed that the safari jeep had exceeded the maximum capacity of passengers at the time of the incident.
