New cabinet of ministers to be appointed today?

As Sri Lanka continues to grapple with an economic crisis and political turmoil amidst growing public agitations, it is reported that a new Cabinet of Ministers is to be appointed in the coming hours.

The focus of the special meeting held between Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and the ruling party’s parliamentary group last night has reportedly fallen on this matter.

In addition, the current crisis situation in the country has been discussed at length during the said meeting at the Temple Trees.

Speaking in this regard, MP Pradeep Undugoda said the government would be able to provide solutions for the fuel, power and LP gas crises within the next few days.

“A new cabinet of ministers will be appointed in the coming hours and we will take measures to resolve the issues faced by the people through a new plan of action,” he added.

According to MP Undugoda, the new cabinet of ministers is set to be appointed from the incumbent government as the opposition has not expressed willingness to take up any portfolios.

He also stated that former finance minister Basil Rajapaksa was not in attendance at the meeting with the prime minister last night.

Speaking to the media following the meeting at Temple Trees, MP Premanath C. Dolawatte said the rise of violence amidst public protests and the measures that should be taken to alleviate the situation was also taken up at the discussion.
