Easter attacks: CA orders to defer proceedings of case against Maithripala

The Court of Appeal has ordered the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court to postpone the proceedings related to the private plaint against former President Maithripala Sirisena over the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.

Announcing the decision of the writ application filed by Sirisena, the Appeals Court judge bench ordered to postpone the matters for 10 weeks, starting from today.

Sirisena had filed the writ application before the Appeals Court calling for the suspension of a private plaint lodged against him filed before the Fort Magistrate’s Court over the Easter Sunday attacks.

Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini and Jesudasan Nadesan, a victim of the Easter Sunday terror attacks, had filed the private plaint seeking to name the former president as an accused of Easter Sunday attacks, for failing to prevent it.

The former president was named a suspect in the plaint filed regarding alleged negligence and failure to prevent the terrorist attacks on April 21, 2019.

After taking the private plaint into consideration, the Colombo Fort Magistrate had issued notice on Sirisena ordering him to appear before the court today (Oct 14) in accordance with a request by President’s Counsel Rienzie Arsekularatne. The former president had also sought a court order dismissing the notice issued by the Colombo Fort Magistrate.
