Applications for postal voting of the General Election 2020 will be accepted from 6th to 16th of March, says the Chairman of the Election Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya.

An extraordinary gazette notification was published on the midnight of March 02, dissolving the 8th Parliament and declaring the date for the General Election as 25th of April.

The Election Commission yesterday (03) published four extraordinary gazette notifications pertaining to the appointment of District Returning Officers, Assistant District Returning Officers, deposits from independent groups and the procedure for casting votes.

The elections chief has stated that the Voter Registration List of 2019 will be used at the General Election 2020. The 2019 list has 271,778 more voters than the list used for the Presidential Election held last year.

He has also noted that nominations for the election will be called for from 12th to 19th of March.

The five-year term of the 8th Parliament began on September 1, 2015, following the parliamentary elections held on August 17, 2015, and was due to expire in August this year. However, under the 19th Amendment, the President has been vested with the power to dissolve the parliament after four and a half years of the sitting of Parliament.
