The student Buddhist monks of Sri Jayawardenapura University have begun a protest fast against the arbitrary actions of the university’s Vice Chancellor, Arts Faculty Students’ Union Secretary Venerable Kamburupitiye Gnaneswara Thera stated.
Students are being suppressed in a large scale within the university and over 70 students have been suspended so far over various baseless charges, the Thero said.
He also mentioned that four student Buddhist monks who were distributing handbills outside the university premises were also suspended last week.
The Venerable Thero said that last night the Vice Chancellor and a group of security officers had entered the hostel of the student Buddhist monks and questioned whither the suspended monk students were at the hostel. He then proceeded to yell at the Buddhist monks in an abusive language which resulted in the eruption of a tense situation, he added.
According to the Venerable Kamburupitiye Gnaneswara Thera two monks who had intervened in order to stabilize the situation were assaulted and were later hospitalized. They have been discharged from the hospital after receiving medical treatment, he added.
“A complaint has been lodged at the Mirihana Police regarding the incident” he further expressed.
