Sri Lanka Cricket today confirmed it would explore the possibility of recruiting Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusigha for the post of National Head Coach of Sri Lanka.
SLC President Thilanga Sumathipala has written to the Bangladesh Cricket Board informing them that SLC is in discussion with Hathurusigha’s attorneys and would offer him the position subject to the full release of his contractual obligations of the BCB.
Speaking on the probable appointment, SLC President said: “There’s no doubt that Hathurusigha would be a great fit for us with the direction of both our short and long terms goals”
“I have written personally to the BCB President – Mr. Nazmul Hassan informing him of our intentions.”
“The Executive Committee is both convinced and confident that he is the right man for the job, and we would like to bring him on board in a professional and transparent manner,” he said.
According to official sources, Sri Lanka is keen to make the appointment with 2019 cricket World Cup in mind.
Hathurusingha was appointed as Bangladesh coach in May 2014. During his tenure, the side went on to register big achievements in world cricket, including securing a berth in the Champions Trophy semi-finals earlier this year.
BCB has so far not given any official word on whether the coach will be leaving to return to home country. The coaching position in Sri Lanka has remained vacant since South African Graham Ford quit in June.
