Lokesh Kanagaraj’s highly anticipated multi-starrer Coolie, led by superstar Rajinikanth, is set for its grand release.
Producer Sun Pictures has revealed that the Tamil action drama has set a new record in US premiere advance sales. It has crossed not only Vijay’s Leo and Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan: I, but also Rajinikanth’s own record with Kabali.
The production house announced on social media with a caption, “#Coolie varraan solliko! #Coolie is the First Tamil film to cross $2 million in premiere pre-sales in North America. #Coolie releasing worldwide August 14th.”
In no time, fans flooded the comments section of the post to celebrate the milestone, with many hailing it as a “Rajinikanth mass” moment.
One of them commented, “All set mighty box office records,” while another wrote, “The movie will create a new history,” and another wrote, “Thalaiva Rampage.”
One fan wrote, “Record Maker and Record Breaker #Thalaivar #Superstar #Rajinikanth #Coolie”. Another fan commented, “1000 Cr Loading.” We wouldn’t be surprised if it did.
With just a day to go before its global release, Coolie has overtaken all previous Tamil cinema premiere sales figures. Kabali (2016) held the top spot until now with $1.9 million in pre-sales. Vijay’s Leo (2023), The GOAT (2024), and Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022) followed, with Jailer (2023) rounding out the top five.
About Rajinikanth’s Coolie
According to the British Board of Film Classification, the film’s synopsis reads, “A mysterious man takes a stand against a corrupt syndicate exploiting and abusing the workers of a port town in this action drama.”
This marks the first collaboration between Lokesh Kanagaraj and Rajinikanth, and this pairing has led to a lot of excitement across fan circles and in the film industry. The cast features Nagarjuna, Nimma Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, and Aamir Khan in pivotal roles.
Set for a worldwide theatrical release on August 14, Coolie is expected to capitalise on the Independence Day holiday weekend in India and the summer box-office window overseas.
The unprecedented US pre-sale numbers shows not only Rajinikanth’s appeal among global audiences till today, but also the growing market for Tamil cinema internationally.
