Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan claims that currently imprisoned and former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka threatened him to join the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in the year 2008.

Addressing the crowd during a function held at the Arayampathy area in Batticaloa the Chief Minister stated that within the political rivalries that took place between various groups in the recent past, armed clashes had also taken place.

However due to realizing that such efforts were futile Mr. Chandrakanthan said that he had decided to enter the political arena to better serve the Tamil public.

The Chief Minister spoke during the commemoration ceremony for the one year death anniversary of Kumarasamy Nanda Goban, who had previously worked as his secretary.
