March 24, 2026   02:24 pm

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to appoint an expert committee, chaired by Dr. Hans Wijesuriya, to develop the energy economy.

The government recognizes the importance of exploring innovative and forward-looking approaches and implementing them to achieve sustainable growth in the national economy, according to a statement issued by the Department of Government Information.

Accordingly, although the energy economy has been identified as a priority sector, Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa noted that weak coordination among the main economic sectors has hindered investment in this area.

In light of this, the President emphasized the need for an integrated economic development framework to build a sustainable economy in the 2026 budget, the Minister stated during the weekly Cabinet media briefing held at the Department of Government Information.

Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved the President’s proposal to appoint an expert committee, chaired by Dr. Hans Wijesuriya, to formulate a framework for developing the energy economy in a way that aligns national policies, strategies, and outcomes.
