Former Indian prime minister IK Gujral dies at 92

Former Indian prime minister Inder Kumar Gujral, who was unwell for some time now, died on Friday in a Gurgaon hospital. He was 92.
India’s Home minister Sushilkumar Shinde announced in Lok Sabha that Gujral passed away at 3.31pm at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon. Gujral was admitted to the Medicity Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon with a lung infection on Nov 19.
Gujral, who was unwell for sometime, was put on the ventilator after his condition deteriorated.
He was on dialysis for over a year now and had suffered a serious chest infection.
Gujral was sworn in as the 12th Prime Minister of India on Monday, the 21st of April, 1997.
Son of Avtar Narain Gujral and Pushpa Gujral, he was born in Jhelum (in undivided Punjab) on 4th December 1919.
Gujral belonged to a family of freedom fighters and actively participated in the freedom struggle.
He was jailed during the Quit India Movement.
Before assuming the office of the Prime Minister of India, Gujral was the minister of external affairs from June 1, 1996 and held additional charge of the ministry of water resources from June 28, 1996.
He was the minister of external affairs earlier during 1989-1990. He was ambassador of India to USSR (Cabinet Rank) from 1976-1980 as well.
“As Minister for External Affairs, he restored India-Bangladesh relations with the Ganga Waters Agreement, rebuilt the structure of dialogue with Pakistan and initiated the negotiations on the historic India-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement,” said Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, in his condolence message. - Agencies
