Authorities have taken steps to temporarily prohibit any boats from being operated in the Tissa Wewa in Tissamaharama.

The decision was taken following the capsizing of a boat last Saturday which claimed the lives of several passengers, said the chairman of the Tissamaharama Pradeshiya Sabha, Harsha Jayaweera.

Seven youth drowned when a boat with 22 passengers had capsized in the Tissa Wewa on Saturday (Dec 22).

The owner of the boat was arrested by police for allowing the 22 youths to climb on board a boat built to carry only 8 passengers.
