Gemunu slams govt’s ‘tax mania’
Mobitel Inner

President of the Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) Gemunu Wijeratne says that a complaint was submitted to the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) today against the Ministry of Finance and several other parties over undue taxing.

Speaking to reporters after handing over the complaint, he said that presently around 20,000 private buses operate across the country while the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) operates only some 5,000 buses.

While the SLTB is receiving Rs 1 billion from the Treasury, it is unfair that more taxes are being imposed on the private bus service which is not receiving any money from the government, he said.

Therefore we expect justice from the Human Rights Commission regarding this injustice, Wijeratne said.

He said it is unreasonable to impose more taxes on the private bus service which is currently providing the government with a large portion of revenue and accused the government of having a “tax mania.”
