Plans are underway to establish two national schools with modern facilities in Kurunegala under the guidance of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, said Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.

The program will be launched as a solution for the abundant student population in the Kurunegala town.

The first of these two schools is scheduled handed over to the students by the beginning of next year, he added.

The Minister stated this yesterday (26), joining an event held at Maliyadeva Girls’ School in Kurunegala to declare open a new three-storied building established under the National Project “Nearest School is the Best School”.

Maliyadeva Girls’ School, which did not have enough classroom facilities for the students although it is located in an urban area, and 9,000 other similar schools island-wide are currently being developed under the “Nearest Schools is the Best School” project.

Commenting further, the Minister stated that ‘Suraksha’ Health Policy for school children has granted an insurance of Rs 200,000 to every student in the country and steps have been taken to recruit new principals according to proper procedures, to fill in all vacancies in the education administrative service, recruit teacher educators and to modify methods of examination and the syllabus.
