Sri Lanka Navy on Thursday (21) dispatched an Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel to assist and provide fuel to the local multiday fishing vessels driven away to the seas off Indonesia due to adverse weather caused by the ‘Amphan’ cyclonic storm.

Thirty multiday fishing trawlers which had been driven away to the seas off Indonesia by the effect of inclement weather are sailing back towards the shores of Sri Lanka, as the effect of ‘Amphan’ is declining, the Navy said in a statement.

Accordingly, the Navy will assist to bring back all these fishing vessels stranded by the cyclonic storm, in due course.

On Wednesday (20), the Department of Fisheries had stated that according to the reports received, none of the 180 fishermen aboard the vessels have sustained any harm or injury in the incident.

Indonesian and Nicobar Islands as well as the Indian authorities were subsequently informed of the stranded the fishermen.
