An individual has been killed in gunfire during a search on an unauthorized sand mining racket in Kilinochchi.

A truck transporting sand without proper authorization had been stopped for a search at a Sri Lanka Army security post at the Muhamalai area in Kilinochchi last night (21).

Reportedly, a suspect on the truck had attempted to run away with the firearm of an Army officer at the post, which had been followed by another Army officer opening fire on the said individual.

The incident had incited unrest among the residents in the area, said Ada Derana reporter.
