Special police operation to nab drunk drivers

Sri Lanka Police says that a special island-wide operation will be launched from 12 noon today to detect drunk drivers on all roads including expressway entry points.

The special operation will be carried out for a period of18 hours from 12 noon this afternoon (April 18) until 6.00 am tomorrow morning (April 19), according to Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana.

He stated that the Police Head Quarters has informed all officers in charge of police stations, territorial divisions, the Director of the Highway Traffic Division, the Director of the Traffic Division, and the Director of Colombo Traffic to conduct a special operation in respect of drunk driving.

Accordingly, officers in charge of police stations and officers in charge of police posts under the Highway Traffic Division have been directed to carry out random breathalyzer tests on drivers.

Meanwhile, a total of 1,834 drivers have been arrested for driving under the influence since April 13 to date, the DIG stated.
