All necessary steps have been taken to hold the local government election, the Election Commission informed the Supreme Court today (Jan 13).
This was conveyed by President’s Counsel Saliya Peiris, on behalf of the election body, when a petition filed by retired Army Colonel W.M.R. Wijesundara was called before a Supreme Court bench consisting of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and Justices S. Thurairaja and Janak de Silva today.
In his petition, filed on January 03, the retired army officer had sought a writ order instructing the Elections Commission to suspend the conducting of the LG polls.
The Election Commission chairman Nimal G. Punchihewa, the members of the election body, the Prime Minister, the Secretary to the Finance Ministry and the Attorney General as the respondents of the petition.
Taking into a request made by the lawyer representing Wijesundara, the Supreme Court allowed the petitioner to put forward an amended application.
The next hearing of the petition has been fixed for January 18.
