The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has further extended the interim order issued preventing the acceptance of nominations for the upcoming Local Government elections from the Kalmunai Municipal Council, until a verdict is given in the relevant petition.

On 17 January, the Supreme Court issued an interim order barring the acceptance of nominations for Kalmunai Municipal Council until today (19 Jan.), regarding the upcoming LG elections.

The order was issued by Supreme Court Justices Vijith Malalgoda, Yasantha Kodagoda, and Mahinda Samayawardena, upon the consideration of two fundamental rights petitions against the exclusion of “Sainthamaruthu” area as a municipal council in the gazette notification.

The petitions were filed by two area residents, claiming that although their area of residence belongs to the Sainthamaruthu Urban Council, it was listed as a part of the Kalmunai Municipal Council in the recently published gazette.
