X-Press Pearl disaster: Court calls for report on compensation payments made to fishermen

The Supreme Court today (05) ordered the Attorney General to submit a report pertaining to the compensation payments made thus far to the fishermen families affected by the ‘X-Press Pearl’ maritime disaster.

The relevant petition was taken up before a five-member Supreme Court judge bench comprising of Justices Murdu Fernando, Yasantha Kodagoda, Shiran Gunaratne, Achala Wengappuli and Priyantha Fernando.

The President of the five-member judge bench, Justice Murdu Fernando questioned Additional Solicitor General Nerin Pulle, who appeared on behalf of the Attorney General, as to how much money has been paid to the fishermen affected by the incident as compensation so far.

In response, the Additional Solicitor General stated that he was unable to answer the relevant question without looking into the matter.

Accordingly, the Supreme Court ordered the Attorney General to submit a report pertaining to the compensation payments made thus far to the fishermen affected by the maritime disaster.
