The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court has delivered an order against a demonstration planned to be staged by teacher-principal trade unions today (Dec.05) near the access road to the Parliament Complex in Battaramulla.

Accordingly, the demonstrators are barred from causing any public inconvenience while protesting on the entry road to the Parliament from Polduwa Junction.

The court order was issued by Colombo Additional Magistrate K.P.S. Harshan, after taking into consideration a request made by the police regarding the potential inconvenience that can be caused by the planned protest to the members of the general public using the said road.

Peaceful protests are however not prohibited and freedom of expression will not be restricted, the court order further reads.

Eight teacher-principal trade unionists including Joseph Stalin, the General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU); Mahinda Jayasinghe, the General Secretary of the Ceylon Teacher Service Union; and Sunil Premathilaka, the President of Principals’ Services Union have been named as the respondents of this court order.
