Heat advisory issued for tomorrow; thundershowers also expected in some areas

The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather alert for extreme heat and heavy rainfall in parts of the island tomorrow (14).

Accordingly, the heat index, the temperature felt on the human body, is expected to reach ‘Caution’ level at some places in the Northern and North-Western provinces and Colombo, Gampaha, Anuradhapura and Trincomalee districts.

In its advisory, the department cautioned that heat cramps and heat exhaustion; continued activity could result in heatstroke.

Against this backdrop, showers or thundershowers are expected in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, North-western and Uva provinces tomorrow.

Fairly heavy rainfall of about 75mm is possible in the Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Uva provinces and Galle and Matara districts.

The department advised the members of the public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
