The Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for high waves for the sea areas extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota for the period from 05.00 a.m. tomorrow (04 May) to 05.00 a.m. the following day.

The advisory warned that swell waves, about 2.5 m – 3.0 m in height and with a wave period of about 12s-16s, may increase in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota. However, this is not for land area, the department said.

It further said there is a possibility that near shore sea areas off the coast extending from Kalpitiya to Matara via Colombo and Galle, may experience surges due to swell waves.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota can be rough at times, the Met. Department added.

Accordingly, naval and fishing communities and those who are engaged in fishing and naval activities in the above sea areas are requested to be vigilant in this regard.
