Colombo receives highest rainfall in last 24hrs

The Department of Meteorology announces that the Colombo District has received the highest rainfall within the period from 08.30 a.m. on Sunday (06) to 07.00 a.m. today (07). The amount of rainfall received by Colombo within this period is 162.5mm.

Meanwhile, heavy downpours have been reported in Walallavita (112.5mm) and Horana (111.5mm) areas of Kalutara District, Neluwa (109.5mm) in Galle Districts and Kalubovitiyana (84.0mm) in Matara District, as per the Department of Meteorology.

Issuing an advisory for heavy rains this morning, the department also warned that the prevailing showery conditions are expected to continue in the south-western part of the island due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone, where winds from the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere converge, is affecting the island’s weather.

Showers or thundershowers will occur in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places, it added.

Thus, the general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
