All train services on Batticaloa Line suspended

October 18, 2024   11:16 am

The Department of Railways announced that all train services between Batticaloa and Colombo Fort have been canceled today (17), following an accident early this morning.

Six daily trains operate on this route, but services have been suspended due to a collision involving a train transporting fuel.

The incident occurred between the Minneriya and Higurakgoda railway stations when the train, en route from the Kolonnawa petroleum storage terminal to Batticaloa, struck a herd of wild elephants.

Four fuel tanks of the train have been damaged, with two of them overturning due to the impact.

Railway authorities are working to assess the situation and clear the tracks, while no timeline has been provided yet for the resumption of services.
